Our Story
In April 2001, three women attending the Melton Institute, a social services seminar held in Fort Worth, met and discussed a new WMU program called Christian Women's Job Corps®. Those three women returned to their homes in different Texas cities with dreams of either beginning a CWJC site in their local communities or working within the CWJC program in some capacity.
One year later, in 2002, Angelia Bostick, one of the three, met with a group of local women who were interested in bringing Christian Women's Job Corps® to Brownwood, Texas. A member of this group was Bettie Evans. Bettie longed to begin a program to assist women in need.
A second planning meeting was held in April 2003. This meeting included Louise Kneese, a national CWJC trainer, and Liz Looby. Louise and Liz were the second and third members of the trio who had brainstormed at the Melton Institue two years earlier. By this time, both Louise and Liz had moved to Brownwood from other cities in Texas.
In 2003, Liz and Bettie accepted positions site coordinators for the Heart of Texas Christian Women's Job Corps site in Brownwood. They both attended the National Certification Training Program in October of that year. The office for the new ministry was located at the Good Samaritan facility on Clark Street.
In August 2004, the ministry moved to the Family Services Center building located at 901 Avenue B., in Brownwood.
From October 2003 through February 2005, volunteers were engaged, mentors were trained, and directors were recruited. Louise Kneese also joined the site coordinating team in 2005. Articles of incorporation and by-laws were drafted, donations were accepted, curricula were developed and potential participants were interviewed.
The first session of classes began March 21, 2005. Since that time, Heart of Texas Christian Women's Job Corp in Brownwood, Texas, has consistently offered a session of classes every spring and fall, equipping women in a Christian environment, for life and employment.
